Nothing is more precious than freedom to live as one wishes. We wish you a #HappyIndependenceDay. "I’m 25 and I’ve been married since a year now even though I never thought I'd marry so young  I’m the first of all my friends to be a Mrs! We’ve always lived near by, so we’ve known of each other but not well. When we met properly at a social gathering, I’d just started working and was enjoying my newly found independence. It was an instant connection  we just hit it off so well that right from the word go, we knew it was meant to be . When you know, you just know so why wait to tie the knot, right? But I had so many apprehensions. Questions like, ’Do I want to marry so young with barely any savings?’ , ‘What about the wedding expenses?’ ‘If I use up all my savings now, what about any future needs?’ Most importantly I wondered, if I wanted my parents to pay such a large amount because they were happy to do it, but after a point, it seemed silly to worry about the wedding expenses more than the wedding itself. I decided that I didn’t want to depend on anyone else for anything. I decided to apply for a loan and take the responsibility upon myself as much as possible. Getting the loan was easy  It didn't cover all the expenses, but covered enough for me to feel good about myself and the wedding. There's a tremendous joy in being self-sufficient & independent  I don’t think i’ve ever felt as empowered.†The above story has been curated by Humans of Bombay. Exchange of punches magically turns into exchange of gifts today. #HappyRakshabandhan "I'm the younger sibling -- she's six years older than me. Despite the age difference, we fought a lot while growing up. Believe me, enemies were probably kinder to each other than we were. I remember our most brutal fight was when I broke her phone-- It took a while before she forgave me! We're old and mature now...things are peaceful, but we still have our moments! Since she started working, she has been quite generous with gifting me things. I thought it was high time I bought something for her-- I wanted to gift her something really special. Our fight came rushing back to me and I decided I wanted to buy her something meaningful like a phone-- but she happens to be an Apple fan. Now the feasibility was a big hindrance. After a lot of due diligence & noting down all available offers, I decided to buy it on EMI. It was surprisingly easy on the pocket that way. Within days I had my gift ready and she was thrilled! It felt nice to gift her something on my own-- and the biggest upside? She now has a phone I'll never dare to break again!" The above story has been curated by Humans of Bombay. Here's a story of a friend who let us know that where there's a will, there's a way! We wish you a #HappyFriendshipDay. 'I am an introvert. I don’t have too many best friends…I’m the type who doesn’t get close to people very easily. But the one best friend I have  we’re inseparable. We grew up in the same vicinity, went to the same school, our siblings were friends and our parents knew each other...it was that kind of a relationship. Unfortunately for me and fortunately for her, she got permanent residency in Canada and had to move. That's when I first understood what the word 'ambivalence' meant. I was very happy for her but at the same time extremely sad for losing my only best friend. Everything was about to change. No random trips or shopping sprees or sleepovers. Not just cities, but we weren’t even going to be in the same time zone! In order to have some light at the end of the tunnel, we both made a pact, that within a year's time, we'll save up & meet halfway for the best vacation of our lives. Now here's the thing, saving money is tougher than earning it! I was too proud to ask my parents for any monetary help nor did I want to cancel the trip we had planned. This acted as the sole motivation for me to get my first credit card. Almost everything, the flight tickets, accommodation, sight seeing tickets were booked on it. I just returned a month back from Europe and had the trip of a lifetime with my best friend. I don’t think there’s anything that will compare to the crazy times we had in those 10 days  they’re irreplaceable.†The above story has been curated by Humans of Bombay. “I’ve worked in the shipping and logistics field since the past decade. Over these years I realized that there is a need for technology in this space and the more I looked, the more I couldn’t find a solution. I started to think that maybe this was an opportunity instead of a problem  so after a decade of working at a corporate job, I decided to quit and develop an app with my partner. A salaried job has its benefits, but you only get into entrepreneurship because you feel deeply about something and that’s how we felt about this. Thankfully, my wife who is working at a large multinational showed faith in me and supported my decision. She said, ‘I’ve got us covered!’ and that kind of support pushed me to test my limits. Having a start up is like having your own baby  erratic hours, you’re up all night and you love it more than anything else. The same goes with this app  we’re a small team now, we’re bootstrapping but we’re also growing. After working long hours the ride back home always annoyed me  I was driving a manual car and was exhausted driving in the Mumbai traffic. This kind of prompted me to upgrade my ride. I had taken a bike loan before, so why not take one again for an automatic car? I got in touch with my bank, and the loan was sanctioned in a week! Today, I’m driving this automatic car and it’s made my life a little less exhausting. The best part? On weekends, I’m teaching my wife how to drive  she’s never learnt so this is our small way of bonding.†The above story has been curated by Humans of Bombay. “I am a widow. I was devastated when we lost him, but I had to be strong for my girls. I didn’t want them to ever feel like there was something missing in their life or they had less of anything, so I threw myself into work. I was working at a shipping company, and I felt like I had things under control  I had a stable job and could pay for all my daughters' needs from education to whatever else they wanted. Soon after my husband's demise, my daughters and I moved into my father’s old house which was in one of those old buildings constructed circa 1935 and had never been renovated. A few years ago, when my daughters and I were talking, they said that maybe we should consider renovating the house. I knew that we were living in a very old house, but I didn’t think it was a possibility for us to afford that kind of change. Being a single mom of two is not really an easy job. The older one suggested, ‘Why don’t we try getting a loan?’. I have always stayed away from loans so it never even crossed my mind. I won't lie, I was hesitant first but my daughters successfully convinced me. I contacted my contractors, asked how expensive the project would be and then applied for a loan  it all went quite smoothly & we had the money at our disposal in no time. My daughters were very thrilled, and I felt extremely happy knowing that we were going to have a brand new home to live in. The outcome was beautiful  everything went well and the space was just as we imagined it to be. Although we've moved out of that house now, I'll never forget how we all felt when we entered our newly renovated house for the first time...it was priceless." “I was born and raised in Mumbai, but my parents shifted to Bangalore a few years ago. I decided to stay here, live with my aunt and make something of myself. My first few years after graduating, I was struggling to make it big in the music space â€â€I was the vocalist of a band called Anthracite. Money was always an issue then. It's hard to explain to your parents why they should continue to support you financially & foster your 'far-fetched' dreams when almost everyone your age has already started earning. I wouldn't say I gave up, but I decided to get a 'real job' to have a stable inflow of money. I’ve been working since a few years now, but because I’m inherently a lazy person, I didn't bother getting a credit card. However, a few months ago when I was at the bank, they said it would take just 10 minutes to apply. The minimum requirement of time & effort made me get one. In no time, I had the card with me and since then I have always been surprised by this piece of plastic! I use it for almost all my expenses - from utility bills to my shopping. I feel like an adult now  I track every transaction of mine and unlike college days, I know exactly where I’m spending, how much I’m spending  so I’m not broke the next month. But the biggest thing it’s done for me? It has given me access to money when I don't really have any! Sometimes, you need something immediately & don't have a lot of time to save enough. So whenever there was a big purchase to be made, I used to give it a lot of thought and save for months before actually buying. But, this credit card has really helped me  I bought myself a new guitar without burning a hole in my wallet and that keeps my passion still alive! The next thing on my list is a trip to Bali with the band. I feel independent and responsible and even though my parent’s aren’t in the same city, they’re much happier now, because they see the change in me. †The above story has been curated by Humans of Bombay.
